Forgiveness Even If You’re Forgiven!

Āli (RA) narrates that the Prophet (S) said, “Shouldn’t I teach you some words that when you say them, Allah will forgive you…even if you have been forgiven previously?”

Lā ʼilāha ʼillallāhul ʻaliyyul ʻaẓīmu, lā ʼilāha ʼillallāhul ḥalīmul karīmu, lā ʼilāha ʼillallāhu subḥānallāhi rabbil ʻaršhil ʻaẓīmi, al-ḫamdu lillāhi rabbil ʻālamīna

Only Allah is the true god, the Most-Exalted, the Greatest. Only Allah is the true god, the Most-Gentle, the Most-Noble.

Only Allah is the true god, the Master of the great throne. All praise is for Allah, the Master of the worlds.

Recorded in Sunan Al-Tirmiḏi.

My Lord, Make Me…

Ābdullah Ibn Ābbas (RA) narrates that the Prophet (S) used to make the following duʻā:

Rabbi ʼaʻinnī wa lā tuʻin ʻalayya, wanṣurnī wa lā tanṣur ʻalayya, wamkur lī wa lā tamkur ʻalayya, wahdinī wa yassiril-hudā ʼilayya, wanṣurnī ʻalā man baḡā ʻalayya, rabbijʻalnī laka šhakkārā, laka ḏakkārā, laka rahhābā, laka miṭwāʻā, laka muḵbitā, ʼilayka ʼawwāhan munībā, rabbi taqabbal tawbatī, waḡsil ḫawbatī, wa ʼajib daʻwatī, wa ṯabbit ḫujjatī, wa saddid lisānī, wahdi qalbī, waslul saḵīmata ṣadrī

O My Lord! Support me, don’t prevent me. Help me win, not lose. Plan for me, not against me. Guide me and make it easy for me to follow the guidance. Help me win against whoever wrongs me.

O My Lord! Make me someone who is always grateful to You. Make me someone who always remembers You. Make me someone who always fears You. Make me someone who is always obedient to You. Make me someone who always humble in front of You. Make me someone who always returns to You humbly.

O My Lord! Accept my repentance, wash away my sins, respond to my duʻās, strengthen me with evidence in support of the religion, fix my tongue so I speak the truth, guide my heart so I can control my emotions, and remove all hatred and resentment from my heart.

Recorded in Sunan Al-Tirmiḏi.

This duʻā covers all bases, especially if you have to stand up for the religion of Islam in any capacity – da’wah, debate or conversation. Al-Mubarakpuri makes a number of interesting comments about this duʻā:

On the word “لَكَ laka (for You)”: the sentence structure suggests that these traits are exclusively for Allah’s sake. Moreover, it shows the worshiper very sincerely wants to have these beautiful traits.”

Knowledge, Wealth, Jannah

Umm Salamah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (S) would make this duʻā after praying Fajr prayer.

Allāhumma ʼinnī ʼasʼaluka ʻilman nāfiʻan, wa rizqan ṭayyiban wāsiʻan, wa ʻamalan mutaqabbalan

O Allah! I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial, and sustenance which is pure/good and wide/abundant, and deeds which are accepted.

Recorded in Musnad of Imam Aḥmad.

My Flaws

Uṯman Ibn Abi Al-Āas (RA) narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (S) make the following duʻā:

Allāhummaḡfir lī ḏambī wa ḵaṭaʼī wa ʻamdī. Allāhumma ʼastahdīka li ʼaršhadi ʼamrī, wa ʼaʻūḏu bi-ka min šharri nafsī

O Allah! Forgive my sins, my unintentional mistakes and my intentional mistakes.

O Allah! I beg You to guide me to the best course of action for me. I seek Your protection from the evil of my soul.

Recorded in Musnad of Imam Aḥmad.

Best Duʻā For Forgiveness

Šhaddad Ibn Aws (RA) narrates that the Prophet (S) said, “The chief of duʻās for forgiveness is (the duʻā below).

Whoever says this in the morning – fully believing in what he/she is saying – then passes away before the evening will be in Jannah. Similarly, whoever says this in the evening – fully believing in what he/she is saying – then passes away before the morning will be in Jannah.”

Allāhumma ʼanta rabbī  lā ʼilāha ʼillā anta, ḵalaqtanī wa ʼana ʻabduka, wa ʼana ʻalā ʻahdika wa waʻdika mas-taṭaʻtu, ʼaʻūḏu bi-ka min šharri mā ṣanaʻtu, ʼabūʼu laka bi-niʻmatika ʻalayya wa ʼabūʼu laka bi- ḏambī, faḡfirlī fa ʼinnahū lā yaḡfiruḏ-ḏunūba ʼillā ʼanta

O Allah! You are my master, You are the only true god! You created me and I am Your slave.

I’m trying my best to live in accordance to Your command, seeking the fulfillment of Your promise. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done.

I return to You because of Your blessings on me. I return to You with my sins hoping for forgiveness.

So forgive me!  Indeed, no one forgives sins except You.

Recorded in Ṣaḥiḥ Al-Buḵhāri.

The Most Gentle

Āli (RA) narrates, “The Prophet (S) taught me that when I’m struck by grief or sadness I should say…

Lā ʼilāha ʼillallāhul ḥalīmul karīmu subḥānallāhi, wa tabārakallāhu rabbul ʻaršhil ʻaẓīmi wal-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil ʻālamīna

There is no god but Allah, the Most-Gentle, the Most-Noble. Glory is for Allah! Allah is blessed, the Master of the great throne. All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

Recorded in Musnad of Imam Aḥmad.

Stressed Out?

Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrates, “Whenever a matter would distress him, the Prophet would say…

Yā ḥayyu yā qayyūmu bi-raḥmatika ʼastaḡīṯu

O Ever-living! O Eternal Sustainer! Exclusively by Your love and mercy, I seek help!

Recorded in Sunan Al-Tirmiḏi.

Happiness In The Home

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates a man said to the Prophet (S), “Oh Prophet, I heard you making this duʻā last night.” The Prophet (S) said, “Yes. Do you see how comprehensive this duʻā is? Is there anything that this duʻā leaves behind?!”

Allāhummaḡfir lī ḏambī, wa wassiʻ lī fī dārī, wa bārik lī fīmā razaqtanī

O Allah! Forgive my sins for me, expand my home for me (i.e. make me happy in my home), and bless me in the wealth and resources You have given me.

Recorded in Sunan Al-Tirmiḏi.

Al-Mubarakpuri comments on this hadith,

“Expand my home for me means make my home accommodating for me as congestion in the basic necessities of the house makes the heart congested, results in sadness and depresses the soul. It could also refer to the grave as that is the real home.

In some manuscripts, we find the wording of the hadith to be “وَوَسِّعْ لِي فِيْ رَأْيِي wa wassiʻ lī fī ra’yi Expand my opinions”, which means make me open-minded.

Bless me in wealth/resources means make my wealth and resources blessed and surrounded by goodness from all sides. It also means, “Make me content with what I have” and to not long for what others have.”

Laylatul Qadr – The Night Of Power

ʻĀishah (RA) asked the Prophet (S), “O Messenger of Allah, if I knew which night is the night of power, what should I say in it?”

The Prophet (S) replied, “Say…

Allāhumma ʼinnaka ʻafuwwun karīmun

tuḫibbul ʻafwa faʻfu ʻannī

O Allah! Indeed you are one who is always forgiving and merciful, and most generous; You love to forgive and pardon, so forgive and pardon me!

Recorded in Sunan Al-Tirmiḏi.
